The Undoing: Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant HBO Series Gets Release Date, Trailer

The Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant-starring limited series The Undoing has been in the works for quite awhile now. Ordered in 2018 and originally scheduled for March of 2020, the series hit the backburner due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now HBO has decided that enough is enough and has given the intriguing show a release date.

The Undoing is set to premiere the first of its six episodes on Sunday, October 25 at 9 p.m. ET. Episodes of the show will first air on HBO and will also be available to stream via HBO Max. Here is the series’ tense first teaser, fittingly punctuated by a heartbeat of a score.

There’s an air of Eyes Wide Shut to that teaser and it’s not just because of the presence of Nicole Kidman. In The Undoing, Kidman stars as Grace and Grant stars as her husband Jonathan Fraser. HBO’s enigmatic description for the show reads:

“The limited series follows Grace (Kidman) and Jonathan Fraser (Grant), who are living the only lives they ever wanted for themselves. Overnight, a chasm opens in their lives: a violent death and a chain of terrible revelations. Left behind in the wake of a spreading and very public disaster and horrified by the ways in which she has failed to heed her own advice, Grace must dismantle one life and create another for her child and her family.”

The Undoing is based on Jean Hanff Korelitz’s 2014 novel You Should Have Known and rest assured that the plot description of that novel is every bit as vague as the one for the show. Prolific TV writer David E. Kelley (Big Little Lies) wrote the series and serves as showrunner. Susanne Bier (Bird Box) directed all six episodes. Bier, Kelly, and Kidman all serve as executive producers alongside  Per Saari, Bruna Papandrea, Stephen Garrett, and and Celia Costas.

While the project has a lot of big-name talent assembled behind the camera, it has just as much in front of it. In addition to Kidman and Grant, the rest of the cast is made up of Edgar Ramirez (American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace) as Detective Joe Mendoza; Noah Jupe (A Quiet Place 2) as Henry Fraser, Jonathan and Grace’s artistic 12-year-old son; Lily Rabe (American Horror Story) as Sylvia Steinetz; Noma Dumezweni (Black Earth Rising) as Haley Fitzgerald; Sofie Gråbøl (Gentleman Jack) as Catherine Stamper; Matilda De Angelis as Elena Alves; Ismael Cruz Córdova (Berlin Station) as Fernando Alves; and Donald Sutherland as Franklin Reinhard, Grace’s father.
