Let the games begin! With Squid Game 2 set to be released on Netflix in December, the hype for the second season is ramping up. The show’s creator Hwang Dong-hyuk and its stars Lee Jung-jae and Wi Ha-jun made an appearance at at Lucca Comics & Games, Europe’s biggest Comic Con, over the weekend to treat fans with a first look at the main teaser trailer, which you can watch below…
Season Two of the series sees Lee Jung-jae reprising his role as Seong Gi-hun, also known as Player 456. With a hardened demeanor and the scars of past games, Gi-hun is on a desperate mission to expose the deadly truth of the competition. Yet, his warnings go unheeded, and tensions rise as fellow players question his intentions.
The teaser also shows the return of Lee Byung-hun as the mysterious Front Man, whose true motivations remain cloaked in secrecy, while Wi Ha-jun’s Hwang Jun-ho is back, driving the narrative forward as the relentless detective on a mission of his own.
Created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, Squid Game was 12 years in development, though it took just 12 days for it to become Netflix’s most popular series ever.
While at Lucca Comics & Games, Hwang Dong-hyuk addressed the recent rumours that David Fincher is set to make a remake of Squid Game, as first reported by Deadline.
“I saw that article in Deadline, but I don’t think it’s official yet, so I cannot tell much about that,” said Hwang Dong-hyuk at the event, “but as a filmmaker and a creator, I respect David Fincher. I love his work, so if he does make a remake of Squid Game of his own, as a fan I will watch it. I think he will make a great Squid Game. It’s still mine!”
Hwang Dong-hyuk also spoke about the popular reality TV series based on his TV show, released by Netflix last November: “I watched one or two episodes of the reality show to see these real-life participants coming into the game and playing these games, and when they played the honeycomb game, watching the players lick the pieces of honeycomb, felt quite a lot
“Some people ask if it dilutes the message of Squid Game to have a show based on it, created by Netflix, for a cash prize. When you look at the Squid Game series, it’s not something that I created to enlighten and it’s not a piece of propaganda either. While it deals with the themes of capitalism, we are in a capitalist society. I created a product to sell it, and Netflix uses the product and sells it as well.
“So I think that it’s only natural for Netflix to take their most successful IP and create other spin-off products based on it. I don’t think that dilutes the message at all in any way.
“I think that when you think about it, in the world depicted in Squid Game, everything in there is created to generate profit. So rather than diluting the message, the fact that another show was created based on that universe, actually exposes the true message of it all.”
Squid Game Season 2 premieres globally on 26 December, only on Netflix.
